BASIC REQUIREMENTS for Japanese Permanent Residence:

If you currently have a “Spouse, Child of Japanese”, “Spouse, Child of Permanent Resident” visa
- (a) you have been living as a married couple for at least 3 years. (this is not required for child of Japanese/Permanent Resident)
- (b) you have been in Japan for the past 1 year period.
- (c) (in the case of a marriage-based visa) your marriage is stable.
- (d) your current visa is the longest visa term currently available (Note: currently, it is possible to apply when an applicant has either a 3 year visa or 5 year visa. However, this may change without notice)
- (e) you pay your taxes and are enrolled in the official social insurance system.
- (f) you have not been sentenced to imprisonment or a criminal fine.
- (g) you have enough income to support yourself, or a family member is able to support your living.

If you currently have a “Long Term Resident” visa
- (a) you have been in Japan for at least the last 5 years.
- (b) your current visa is the longest visa term currently available (Note: currently, it is possible to apply when an applicant has either a 3 year visa or 5 year visa. However, this may change without notice)
- (c) you pay your taxes and are enrolled in the official social insurance system.
- (d) you have not been sentenced to imprisonment or a criminal fine.
- (e) you have enough income to support yourself, or a family member is able to support your living.

If you currently have any other type of visa (work visas, etc.)
- (a) you have been living in Japan for at least 10 years.
- (b) among these 10 years, you have had a work visa or family type visa (“Spouse, Child of Japanese”, “Spouse, Child of Permanent Resident”) for at least 5 years.
- (c) your current visa is the longest visa term currently available (Note: currently, it is possible to apply when an applicant has either a 3 year visa or 5 year visa. However, this may change without notice)
- (d) you pay your taxes and are enrolled in the official social insurance system.
- (e) you have not been sentenced to imprisonment or a criminal fine.
- (f) you have enough income to support yourself.
- (g) your daily conducts are good and in accordance with the laws.
